Obsession
If I’m not mistaken, I’m pretty sure this is—surprisingly enough—my first time watching a horror film at a movie theatre. Safe to say I loved the experience! Screaming and shaking with the audience for every jump scare there was, was such an awesome experience in all honesty. I’ve just arrived at my apartment from the theatre. I genuinely need a moment to wind down after watching this film ‘cause I’m overwhelmed all over. Genuinely left the screening with tears prickling my eyes (yes, I’m susceptible that way).
I wanna dedicate a whole paragraph just for Inde Navarrette—OMFG! Her acting was good beyond measure and I’m not even exaggerating. Last time I was this affected by an actress’s performance was when I first saw Vivien Leigh playing Blanche in A Streetcar Named Desire—so just imagine. Like, I’ve seen plenty of actresses whose acting has left me speechless, like Catherine Deneuve and such, but not many performances have left me this disturbingly entranced. I for real left the theatre thinking: “this is why I’m majoring in acting.” Also, the way they put her in the dark in most scenes where you just couldn’t see what was going on with her face, and she still managed to deliver such a petrifyingly scary portrayal of the character. I’m in complete awe.
I got to admit that some parts were too predictable—which, by the way, ‘predictable’ doesn’t equal to being bad—like the sandwich scene or the car one (you know the one). Like, I didn’t exactly know that that was going to happen, but I surely knew Nikki would appear out of nowhere. By the way, can we talk about that scene? ‘Cause man, I’ve never heard an audience scream so loudly (or myself for that matter); like Bear, I was left clutching my pearls for dear life.
I think it could very well be said that the horror that this film actually portrays is the male need for control over women. It’s in the way even when he knows she’s not herself, he still takes it to his advantage to r*pe her. I think the scene that makes it 100% clear what a scumbag Bear is—when Nikki, in her suffering, asks Bear to kill her and he, instead of showing mercy or concern, makes it about himself asking her “what was so bad about being with him?” while also proceeding to go cheat on her in the following scene. It disgusts me how there’s some men who’ll watch this and genuinely feel bad for the ‘poor guy’. It’s not that I’m soulless, ‘cause I did empathize a bit with the guy; I was also shitting my pants watching her, mostly when she did that backward walk—hell nah!
All in all, such a well-made film. I think it’s beyond doubt one—if not the best—film to come out in 2026 so far. All flowers to the director! 💐
