This is the sort of film that Nolan should have been making for his entire career. I usually hate Nolan films because the script is so densely filled with exposition and confusing epigrams, hurried along by frantic and exhausting filmmaking, that by the time a moment of tension or pathos comes along I am too tired and baffled to care about anything happening on the screen. The Odyssey is completely different, because the narrative has a clear emotional thrust for the entire runtime. Nolan almost ruins it by trying to throw in some exposition about the Bronze Age collapse and trade routes, but (thank God) he mostly resists those impulses. There’s plenty of ways that this fails to live up to the text, but it’s unapologetically an adaptation and I think that’s just fine.
