Zodiac
Fincher’s best film? I'm not too sure the Social Network still got it for me. His most mature? Definitely.
This isn't a movie about a murderer. It's a movie about the disease of curiosity. Fincher, who is the ultimate control freak, creates a film about men who lose control of their lives because they can't stop thinking about a riddle. The irony is so good. In Zodiac, there is a scene where Robert Graysmith is in a suspect's basement and the lights go out. This would be a jump scare for most directors. David Fincher uses it to show the audience how heavy the dark is and, more crucially, how heavy Graysmith's commitment to staying in it is. It's amazing how Zodiac predicted the true-crime industrial complex when you watch it in 2025. There were only unhappy men in rooms with filing cabinets who were ruining their relationships because a clue didn't add up. It is what i love personally about David Fincher's work, it's always keeps you hooked, not losing you for a single second, highly recommend for anyone who loves David Fincher's style.
