Frankenstein
Visually stunning and incredible adaptation of Mary Shelly’s novel. I was not expecting Jacob Elordi to be able to pull off this challenging role - but he emits curiosity and innocence as the creature is supposed to be. I love the tiny details such as the blonde patch of hair as it’s a different scalp. Also grateful that finally the creature is shown in its true nature - Childlike. The creature is not a monster, it was created and discarded when not fitting Frankenstein’s plan. like other children, he cannot understand everything in a short period of time. He is deeply afraid and misunderstood and that is why he acts violently - to defend himself. He is also designed beautifully - (Jacob elordi is conventially attractive.) As the creature is described to be beautiful but people are scared and horrified by him due to the fact of how he was brought to life being unnatural. I’ve been sick of the mis-characterisation of the creature and I’m so glad Guilliermo del toro finally did this character justice. The creature has never been the antagonist, he was rejected on countless times for how unnatural he was - relation to the uncanny (typical in the gothic genre to be utilised). Victor is the antagonist - his selfishness and grim ambition leading to the harm of the creature and himself inevitably. (He is genuinely a TERRIBLE father as he has no patience or care for the creature when he realises it will take longer than thought to be able to get him to be at the standard he wanted.) “You are the monster”. On another note, every aspect of this film was visually stunning. Most notably the special effects throughout the film - so incredible and often so grotesque I was gagging. This film is stunning, gothic and sad - in shorter terms I loved it. I feel as though it was thought through deeply and del toro understood the text thoroughly. I will recommend this film for ages now. Highly tragic, was an emotional wreck throughout its duration. Del toro always understands the gothic genre as it is and that makes me so pleased. Probably my favourite movie of this year so far. I don’t often do a long review but I felt this captivating film deserved it.
