Few first thoughts right after finishing the film: Brilliant piece of commentary on major societal issues even beyond racism and police brutality. The lack of opportunity and investment in minority communities which for decades has halted any possible progress, has led to a wider spread of strain and social unrest in such neighbourhoods. And since the decades of oppression by the elite can’t be tackled, it results in tension within these minority groups, demonstrated in the film through Willie’s “jealousy” of the Korean couple’s success with their business. This strain from material and social deprivation is shown to not be a major concern until police brutality against a black man (which has accounted for 24% of all individuals killed by police last year) ultimately acted as the straw that broke the camel’s back, leading to the “violent” breakout, showing the apparatus of social control put in place by the power elite to be the catalyst for the collapse of minority led societies. **“***One of the police was black!” * Lee further conveys how institutionalised racism and state power dynamics come into play even when an individual wears a police uniform. During the murder of Raheem he’s shown to be protecting the white officer guilty of the murder while carrying Raheem's lifeless body to the car. He’s unable to speak out against his white colleagues and rather takes part in the crime himself, showing the complex layers of systemic complicity and helplessness faced by black communities who may want to “break out of the system”

Masterpiece. (I don’t have words left for a complete and thorough breakdown)

Gaps all films released this year as of now (except the odyssey ofc)
