The Shining
omg. a perfect horror movie. it had a huge psychological darkness and overall sense of umbra and suspense. the sound design reflected the terror of the scenes perfectly. it studied the effects entrapment and isolation has on people in a haunting way. I also see it as a display of how suppressed feelings of contempt and resentment can be released through violent outbursts. even if the intentions of acting on that growing hatred weren’t apparent it still could’ve h been rooted from the subconscious.
I loved how the antagonist was truly the hotel itself. The personification of the place creates a sense of inevitability within their outcome. It seems as though no matter the residents it always leads to the same conclusion. Beyond the effect upon the narrative, the building also helped create visual appeal and helped make the film more iconic and memorable.
Shelly Duvall and Jack Nicholson’s performances might be one of my new favourite in the horror genre.
