Doubt
In the pursuit of wrongdoing, one steps away from God
12 minutes was all Viola Davis had and that was all she needed. Like she makes such a lasting impact that im feeling it the next day. Nobody does it like her.
I love the ways the movie uses doubt and certainty to define each of the characters. Sister Aloysius’s steadfast certainty against Father Flynn that never really allows itself to be either ‘true’ or ‘false.’ Either he is doing what she thinks, or she simply allows the correlations to feed into her disapproval of Flynn’s more “liberal” way of running the church. I also like the difference between Aloysius and Flynn, how she represents the Eye of God in the church, how, once Sister James goes against her will, the lights go out, only to come back on when she becomes just like her.
And the discussions over faith and how doubt is needed and that to falsely claim to be certain in your beliefs 100% of the time only leads to a further separation between you and God are REALLY interesting.
And yes everyone puts their everything in it. Meryl Streep man💔. The way she admits to her doubt at the end is just 🙂↕️. Because we never TRULY know what she doubts, whether it be her faith, her conviction of Father Flynn, her trust of the Catholic Church, it’s all up for us to decide and I loooove that.
