Total Recall
Total recall is an absolutely brilliant action movie. I love the rapid change in pace from a bleak almost calm cyberpunk setting up to a high stakes action chase. I love the unique sci fi concept that helps the story make sense but also be ambiguous at the same time. Normally I don’t like it when films mask nonsense in ambiguousness however this movie utilises the idea of ambiguousness perfectly. The adventure that Quaid goes on makes perfect sense if you just watch the film normally but the whole mission also matches the description of the dream he ordered so it could be that the adventure was all a dream the whole time but the film totally leaves it up to the viewer and the execution is near perfect. The pacing is a bit off at times but honestly it’s only really towards the end when a hurdle or events just hit you all at once. The set design and practical effects have aged phenomenally and make the society we see feel really realistic. Mars as a setting is also really cool visually but I also like how it’s seen as more run down and basically a society for poorer people. Total recall is a fast paced action masterpiece and it’s basically inception but bloodier and less complicated.
