Bodies
“One good thing.”
I have genuinely never seen a series be so consistently strong and then ruin it in the last 30 seconds. That ending was bordering on perfection, it was so beautiful yet the inclusion of that final scene completely ruined the series for the sake of some awful sequel bait. I get Maplewood needed to be included in the ending but the other three characters get a sense of closure with the promise of a new beginning which is beautiful. The knowing look between Hillinghead and Ashe, the brief encounter between Whiteman and Esther and Hasan getting a life with her son but that all gets ruined.
Obviously there are comparisons to be made between this and Dark which remains a masterpiece. At times the writing was on par with Dark but unlike Dark, Bodies fails to stick the landing.
Charles Whiteman is easily my favourite of the four protagonists, I love characters with shoot first ask questions later attitudes and Whiteman takes this to the extreme. The obvious standout from the whole series has to be Stephen Graham as Sir Julian/Elias. The way he goes between the two personalities is seamless and he’s genuinely scary at times which makes the scene between Hillinghead and Julian in episode 8 so brilliant. You feel the mask of Julian slip and the real Elias coming through.
I wish I could give this five stars, I really do but I feel so genuinely let down by the ending that I can’t bring myself to do it. If a season 2 does get released then I will be holding it to the highest of standards as this set the bar so unbeatably high.
