Squid Game
Season 2
I never really understood the hype for Squid Game when it came out. Don’t get me wrong, I loved it but I didn’t see why it was literally everywhere. To that end I wasn’t particularly fussed when Season 2 was released. It was a fun show that had a good ending that could have been left open. I didn’t think a season 2 would be as good. Boy was I wrong.
Season 2 is exactly what a follow up to Squid Game should be. It’s grittier, meaner and darker. It still retains all of the iconography that became synonymous with season 1 but it puts a darker spin on it visually. The colours are slightly muted which works so well.
Gi-hun is a far more interesting character this season and I love the dynamics he has with the other characters. Talking of other characters, the new cohort of players is very interesting and dare I say more memorable. The mother and son, the trans woman and Thanos. They all stand out and are all far more memorable than the previous cast. T.O.P’s Thanos is by far my favourite of this season, he’s unironically hilarious and whilst people criticise T.O.P, I thought he was great.
By far my favourite thing about this season is Lee Byung-hun. I’m not going to get into it but my god I’m glad this show realised his talent. The man is incredible!
My only real complaint is the open ending. Obviously a 3rd season is coming soon but this season should have been billed as Season 2 Part 1 rather than a standalone season. It’s interesting but I have a feeling that the reasoning behind this is going to be clear soon enough.
Like I said before, this is by far a better season than the first and I can’t wait for season 3! I think I’m now more hyped for this show than I was in 2021!
