Wonder Man
“Let your misery drive the bus.”
Wonder Man was the first marvel project in a long time that I didn’t have some form of hype for. I don’t know why I wasn't, but I’m so glad I decided to watch anyway.
Now Wonder Man is so incredibly special to me and I will forever cherish it. It came around at a time in my life when I needed levity more than anything else and that ultimately what this show delivered. It’s heartfelt and so much of that rests on the performances of Yahya Abdul Mateen II and Ben Kingsley. Those two are pure dynamite together and both of them deliver some incredible and I mean incredible performances that make you fall so in love with Simon and Trevor.
I love how character driven this show is. It’s not a superhero show and that makes it for me. You don’t want him to be a hero, you want him to succeed in being an actor. The superhero stuff is just an insanely cool bonus and in a world full of open identities, I’m so glad that all of the superhero stuff revolves around Simon keeping his identity a secret.
Trevor Slattery is easily a top 3 MCU character which is something I never thought I’d say. He’s so charming and incredibly funny. I’m so glad Marvel realised they had Ben Kingsley and decided to do something with him.
There’s also some really good self contained story work in the form of the Doorman episode and each episode works well with the short running times making an incredibly bingable series.
It’s the least ‘Marvel’ Marvel thing in a long time and it’s so incredibly refreshing to have a character driven story with a real heart that doesn’t rely on spectacle to carry a story. It recognises the star power of its leads and chooses to capitalise on this which causes this show to be a real wonder, man.
