Drone
This film manages to ask again and complicate once more the relationship between camera, subject, and audience. In the big 2026 this is no small feat! I felt it was tasteful in its assertions and while not exactly subtle it didn’t fall into the over explaining Netflix movie trap that so many do nowadays. We are watching ourselves as much as each other, and gaze itself can be violent.
Any single man or person could be behind that drone and because she’s a sex worker society gives zero fucks!
The depiction of sex work was frank and honest without being pervy or sexualizing her. I appreciate a movie about surveillance of women and how it affects their psyche that isn’t a comment on the “male gaze.”
One of the most impressive parts of it was the way that the blending of diegetic and non-diegetic sound was mirrored in the diegetic(!!!) and non-diegetic camerawork. And that sex scene with the heartbeat in the modular synth was incredible.
What’s true is the narrative was dogshit but this movie rules too much for me to care. It’s climax was in a literal hall of mirrors and it rocked!
