Sinners
Almost a perfect movie. The way this film deals with evil is extremely relevant to anti-colonial struggle and survival — understanding that when the connection to ancestors is severed, a person/community will lose their soul. And they will do everything they can to feel a semblance of that connection, of that safety. The vampires might not be evil but they do not have souls and that is what makes them dangerous and that is what makes them parasites of culture and of song. Unfortunately Remmick is spiritually Israeli lol.
You can see how Ryan Coogler relied so much on his community when the credits are rolling and the list of consultants is both granular and expansive. This did not in any way prevent a singular vision from coalescing, a vision of the past with one foot in the future. I haven’t finished feeling this movie’s impact on my life. Sinners won’t let me become hopeless.
And let’s not forget that on top of it all it’s a fucking amazing genre bending horror/action movie/musical? with some of the most astounding aspect ratio choices I’ve witnessed to date. Sinners does it all and doesn’t miss!
