Whiplash
MAJOR SPOILERS 10/10 how far are you willing to go ? Wow this was genuinely amazing. Some of the best insults ever to. J.K. Simmons knows how to insult you. I love all music so I knew I would love this movie but the drum solos are just so epic. And the 10 minute long drum solo at the end was just cinema. And this ending is so two dimensional. In really goes either way. Some may see it as a horrifying ending. As you can see it on Andrew‘s dad‘s face as it looks like he can tell his son Andrew has just lost himself. In another way, you can see it as Andrew finally becoming at the top of the totem pole. As the whole movie, you see him work for this goal that he has finally accomplished. I honestly think it is a mixture of both for me how I feel about this ending. I find it horrifying in the fact that Andrew is so far gone to come back now. But it also was just such an epic moment to se Andrew succeed and become legendary. Andrew had an obsession of becoming legendary the whole movie and when he finally hits it us as an audience don’t know how to feel. I think that was just masterful storytelling for a masterful ending. Fletcher obviously set this whole thing up to embarrass Andrew but as he realizes what is going on they take all the hatred out their body and bond through music. Just so many amazing scenes in this movie. It was honestly so horrifying to try to watch Andrew impress Fletcher who is constantly abusing him the whole movie. The car accident sequence was insane to watch and you just see Andrew reach his boiling point as he attacks Fletcher. Andrew was willing to do whatever to become legendary which was horrifyingly iconic. As Andrew literally says “I’d rather die drunk, broke at 34 and have people at a dinner table talk about me than live to be rich and sober at 90 and nobody talks about me.” I had no clue how to take this quote in on this watch. It made me pause the movie and think what would I choose. To be a nobody or an absolute icon. Even though Fletcher was a horrible person and teacher I felt like some of his teaching tactics worked. This quote obviously came from a sick man but I loved it “ I was there to push people beyond what’s expected of them. I believe that that’s an absolute necessity.” I think he did do this but at the cost of his own students well beings. Andrew wouldn’t have had that legendary moment without the teachings of Fletcher and I stand on that. The performances, the shots, and the music just culminate to make this a perfect movie and one of the best movies i’ve ever seen.
