so depressing. i fear this movie will be the first thing i think of when i begin to fall in love.

scariest part of this experience was going to the theatre alone, on friday the thirteenth, during valentines weekend, and being surrounded by couples! 😰

i actually liked this more than i thought i would, but only after accepting that is was such a loose adaptation that it can’t even really be called an adaptation anymore. it’s easy to appreciate if you treat it as a completely separate thing from the novel (which is the opposite of what an adaptation should do, but oh well). the cinematography was beautiful, the set design was as well. obvious points are taken off for the blatantly bad casting. i really wanted to see a future Heathcliff being tormented by Cathy’s ghost well :( wasn’t a huge fan of how they depicted isabella’s character. overall I enjoyed the exaggerated eroticism but at times it was a tad bit much (which is crazy coming from me). in my opinion, it’s so odd to have so many allusions to sex but not a singular sex scene. it’s like fennell was too scared to just actually put out what she really wanted to convey. it was definitely a bold, stylized, and risk-taking “adaptation,” having its tremendous faults but also small victories, so i’ll give it that.

wow. this movie had me experiencing such a broad range of emotions that i didn’t even know were possible to experience in a two hour time range. the ending fucking gutted me.
