Obi-Wan Kenobi
Obi-Wan Kenobi is a miniseries with massive potential that falls short of achieving the greatness that was expected of it.
This was the Star Wars project that I was most excited for during the post sequel trilogy era. Obi-Wan is a character that has always resonated with me and felt that he had a story of his own to tell. Unfortunately, it was Disney that told it. And not George Lucas.
A series that should’ve been about Obi-Wan reconnecting with force, is instead a “fun” and safe space adventure. A story that the fandom has waited decades to be told is minimized to nothing more than an insignificant content filler. As a part of the fandom myself, it is so sad to see.
There’s nothing that is bad here per say. The special effects are great as always, the acting is solid and there are some memorable moments. But even those memorable moments are just for the set piece and not to serve the story. Say what you will about the prequels but George Lucas had a story he wanted to tell and he told it. The films weren’t perfect but they had purpose. Obi- Wan just feels like an excuse to have a couple of cool lightsaber duels with Vader and that’s it.
Since Disney bought Lucasfilm, their biggest issue has been executing a compelling story. That was the issue with the Sequels, Book of Boba Fett and now Obi-Wan. This one stings a little more however. Obi Wan Kenobi is one of the most beloved characters in all of fiction and he deserved better. One of the main characters in the greatest franchise in history should’ve had his own film with strong writing. Not a mediocre miniseries to pump up ratings and streams.
I will forever love Star Wars and appreciate the memories it has brought. But I think it’s time to finally put the franchise to bed.
