Paris Is Burning
Watching Paris Is Burning has been for me the sobering look in the mirror that keeps me grounded in reminding myself of my internalized resentment of queerness while letting myself acknowledge what I have yet to learn and am still learning. As a queer, white-passing, upper-middle class, Latinx woman living in the a socially progressive city in 2019, I had had to teach myself (and unteach myself) so much with regards to how much my own experiences will allow me to truly understand the lived experiences of others. Sharing your label’s first letter in an acronym used to describe all of the others like and unlike yourself does not make you immune to the same poisonous thoughts and feelings about the queerness of others and yourself. I am still realizing that, but my eyes are wide open, and I am ready to look.
