Hellboy
What makes a man a man?
It's the choices he makes. Not how he starts things, but how he decides to end them.
Talking about choices, Guillermo Del Toro is the best one when it comes to monster-movies.
This movie had been in the list for a long time, and finally I was able to see it, and I regret not watching it before.
Hellboy is a unique character, not like the theme "monsters who are destined to doom us all" but choose not to". Anyway, how he portrays that theme really is special, like every single character of the franchise:
Doug Jones' wise Abe Sapien, the uncomprehended pyrokinetic Liz and ... in a weird way even the nazi masochist Kroenen)
Special is what we all are, there is no such thing as normality.
This is the philosophy of Del Toro and he never misses to teach us that in his movies.
I'm not much of a problem-solver. Three decades. I've only completed two sides. But I do know this much. If there's trouble, all us FREAKS have ... is each other.
Going back to the movie
I had fun watching it. Hellboy is the typical charismatic badass tough monster who never misses the opportunity to tell sume hard stuff mid fight.
The monsters were peak design, something out of Lovecraft's mind. The "Sammaels", when Hellboy as not around, are displayed as nightmarish and unbeatable creatures, lurking in the dark umid tunnels.
[ SPOILER ]
The cosmic god at the end of the movie was literally how i'd imagine Nyarlathothep or a Mi Go to be shown in a movie (Please, someone, let Del Toro direct "At The Mountains of Madness")
In the abscence of light, darkness prevails.
