Backrooms
Reach for the stars and fall flat on your face. This movie such a fantastic and interesting concept, but does not have the nutcrackers to back it up. If it won't go big, I'd rather it just go home.
Borrowing ideas from David Lynch and House of Leaves is fine but don't expect me to lavish you with praise just because you know what a Holloway is, or publicly adored Twin Peaks. If this backrooms could be compared to the Black Lodge, it's like the bathrooms, because I would rather not stay long and it probably smells bad, especially not with Mr Twenty-years-old's first Navidsonlike OC sauntering around trying to make me care about his failed dreams and stinking of mediocrity and whisky.
I appreciate that this movie does do some things well; the set design is great which leads to a sometimes genuinely creepy atmosphere, the actors are giving it their all, and it can choose to have some fun and interesting camera work. But unfortunately Mr Pixels (2016) does not have a tight enough grip on this movie to create something that is more than enjoyable at best.
