Fitzcarraldo
This movie is the ultimate epic feat of cinematography. I don’t think any other crew in the history of cinema ever faced anything remotely as hard as the ones who shoot Fitzcarraldo. The rawness hostile nature of the jungles and his people surely created the soil for a literal production hell. But in return they give the movie such an authenticity. You can almost feel the jungle, perceive its immensity, its dangers. It’s almost alive as a single being rather than billions of being living together. You can feel both the beauty and dangers so clearly. But for Herzog, showing an unprecedented seen view of the deep amazon rainforest wasn’t enough, after all, he already did it with Aguirre. Because clearly, the most remarkable thing about this movie is not the jungle itself but the ship they moved through it. Watching it move, up and down, in the river, in the rapids, up a fucking hill. without ever using models, CGI or any special effects whatsoever. It’s really a blessing for my eyes to see something so amazing being pulled off really on screen, after being used to years of poor CGI in movies Fitzcarraldo is really a beam of hope. Only Nolan today can achieve this sense of scale and realness and I think we are lucky there is at least one director that still tries to put crazy shit off
