The World's End
Sometimes I feel alone in how much I absolutely love this film. The characters all feel so distinct and memorable in both the way they’re written and performed, and are massively entertaining to watch, especially Simon Pegg’s Gary King, and there are so many great visual gags and recurring jokes. It’s incredibly smart, funny, entertaining and poignant, even if the last 10 minutes do kind of suck. I notice something new every time I rewatch it. There are so many great details in the writing.
It still kind of has the issue with most Edgar Wright films in that the female characters are somewhat underdeveloped, but unlike in Baby Driver, Rosamund Pike’s character isn’t the driving force behind the main character’s motivations. It also helps that Simon Pegg has a lot of charisma and likeability despite his character being a total dickhead, unlike Ansel Elgort. His mannerisms and line deliveries perfectly capture the essence of Gary King’s manchild personality, and it is VERY funny and fun to watch. Rewatching this made me appreciate what a great and underappreciated comedic actor Simon Pegg is.
I find it weird that people hold Shaun of the Dead to be some sort of gold standard of comedy/parodies. I don’t see what other people do in that movie, although I didn’t grow up with it so maybe nostalgia plays a factor. I like Shaun of the Dead but this will always be far more entertaining and rewatchable to me. It’s one of those movies I could watch over and over again and never get bored of.
