Death of the idealized, nuclear American way of life, ushering in the new age of fear and random violence. A time in which your life can be prematurely ended because you were at school, the store or a movie theater at the wrong time. It is seriously unfuckingbelievable that this was made in 1968, it is so prescient and predictive of the violent gun culture that has come to dominate today. Bogdanovich also shoots the living shit out of this, abundant close-up tracking shots of the shooter elevate the utter horror instilled watching the casualness of his actions. No music for this is completely brilliant aswell, there is no sense of tension created by sound, just desolate, chilling silence. Also, QT completely aped the narrative and thematic through line of this movie with Once Upon a Time, like it’s pretty insane Lol
