Under the Skin
I think the most impressive aspect of this film is its ability to effectively interrogate and dichotomize the inherent incomprehensibility of both the alien and human perspective without the use of anything other than visual subtext. There is so much suggestion of different ideas all relating to the tether of consciousness (strictly translated visually) and the prescribed laws of nature that consciousness applies. Glazer breaks down the prescribed laws that consciousness applies then forces you to reckon with something that is inherently incomprehensible to you, and you have to reckon with the implications that something you cannot comprehend would be willing to break every law of empathy you know. Then to turn that incomprehensibility onto the alien and force her to reckon with all of the incomprehensibilities of human life? amazing. The subtext of the film is so deeply rich there is practically an unending amount of interpretations you can ascertain. The suggestion of incomprehensibility being met with inherent hostility by humanity serves as another interrogation of the most core human principles and the idea of human supremacy. It's all just very good. Not to mention that the movie is a technical masterpiece in every formal standard. Brilliant subtle performance by Johansson and one of the best film scores ever probably. One of my favorites! 😁
