I think this is a film which asks a lot of you if you grew up German. Can I actually empathise with people who were taking part in this war as perpetrators? It’s a struggle there is this voice in your head all the time and especially the commandant is a war criminal for sure, who might have been able to gaslight himself into believing he just followed orders, but around him are people for who we don’t know why they are in this war but we learn that they are human. I felt in a way this film wasn’t interested in making a film about World War Two, this film wanted you to understand that war has no winners. Or as the film’s opening statement says: “Only the dead have seen the end of war” I think it was great there were a lot of rather unknown actors, all of whom were performing on a top level. Especially Leonard Kunz was a discovery for me and someone I can see getting the Filmpreis for it. Oh yeah the end? Ask me in a month what I think about it, if it’s genius or terrible.

I already think my rating for this might be too low, there is so much happening emotionally, but also on symbolic and storytelling level. It’s good it might be brilliant, I’m gonna rewatch this for sure and feel it will change my perspective to an even more enthusiastic feeling about this. The cast is incredible as well, all the Chucks are amazing, for me it was Karen Gillan though who stole the show. The movie keeps you invested and guessing throughout. I felt like an armchair detective piecing it together while being on an emotional rollercoaster. Can’t recommend it strongly enough!

Not even Woody Harrelson aka “Sat Daddy” could make me a sat diver. The film is really good though!
