Silence
Silence is a masterpiece. This is Scorsese’s best work of the 21st century and honestly some of the best work in his career.
It’s a brutal, thoughtful exploration of faith and what survives when belief is tested beyond reason. You don’t have to be religious to be moved by this. The themes of faith, belief, hope, and love are handled with such complexity, and the film isn’t afraid to acknowledge how certain ideologies can feel intrusive or self-righteous in their certainty.
Andrew Garfield is phenomenal, giving one of the most spiritually intense performances I’ve ever seen. The cinematography is stunning and somber, and the screenplay is razor sharp and some of the best I have ever seen.
That final shot says everything without saying anything at all. Completely powerful. Completely unforgettable.
