david koepp… you make me laugh

really effective directorial choices, carves out an ultraniche and well-motivated aesthetic for itself that i've never seen replicated and i think ended up being the key to the film truly moving me. however -- although possibly partly due to the retroactive powers of the 00s wave of "fast zombie" films which this essentially began -- i didn't really feel like the movie was offering much narratively that seemed novel or uniquely compelling. it does the "people are worse than zombies actually" thing pretty well, but we've been doing that since the original zombie film and i think it's been done better. strangely, the aspect of the screenplay that struck me as the most original was the britishness of it all, and it got me thinking about the UK and its very specific place in the world in a way i don't think i ever had before. maybe that's what the point is. anyway p.s. also! if you wanna check out a very different but also aesthetically singular and awesome zombie movie also loosely based on the novel day of the triffids by john wyndham (which you should also definitely read i promise it's great), give thom eberhardt's night of the comet a try
