May December
I have sooo many thoughts about this movie. It’s absolutely unsettling in the way that a movie like this needs to be. Here are a few of the best parts to me:
When Elizabeth is acting out Gracie’s letter to Joe in one take, Natalie Portman gives a masterclass in acting it’s insane.
Joe spends the whole movie seeming so small, like a kid in an adult body but in such a subtle way. Then when he’s finally realizing maybe the relationship is wrong and he’s fighting Gracie. Charles Melton definitely deserves awards for this I was in awe.
When Gracie starts asking Joe who’s the boss and he’s just silent and stuttering. I saw the clip this is based off of and geez this lady was crazy and insane.
Elizabeth and Gracie slowly beginning to look like each other.
Gracie losing control of her “prey” and immediately the next morning going hunting. While at the same time Joe’s caterpillars (in a cage very similar to one I grew up seeing advertised to children) finally becoming butterflies that he lets out.
The music being so abrupt and unnerving with zooming in or out on the subject.
The ending when Elizabeth says “it’s becoming more real”
I feel like I need to watch it again to really fully understand all the subtleties that made this film so disturbing. I had my eyebrows crinkled for so much of it in shock and horror and amazement as well.
