Bugonia
I was told by Carter that this was better than Poor Things, which made me more eager to see this. Bugonia is the newest release in the Lanthimos catalogue. Of course it features Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons, and the great Stavros Halkias!! At the start of my Bugonia watch I thought it’d be a nihilistic tale where Teddy kidnaps a CEO Michelle, only to find out there is no “aliens” and that there’s just a group of corporate elites controlling everything. Simple, I know, but I figured this was just gonna be a Fuck Big Pharma and Fuck Big Corporations kinda film. And in a loophole way yes… however, once you get to the ending everything changes.
At the end of my viewing I damn near stood up and applauded! This film was daring, beautiful, and disturbing everything Yorgos is sought out to be. Bugonia is a film about the failures us as humans have done to the world, and the irreversible damages that are done to the planet we call home. It calls out the ignorance and magical thinking of people, and forces you to look at the harsh and disturbing realities of what is wrong with the world. Bugonia is served as a wake up call to us as humans… to stop avoiding reality, and rather come together to fix the world, before like in the ending it is too late for us…
