A Clockwork Orange
free will is what gives "morality" an actual meaning.
i like how kubrick imaged an unrealistic future. the furnitures, people, places, clothes—they all feel so uncanny. i absolutely loved his style but i think he missed some certain things in the book.
in the movie, they didn't add alexander f. writing his book, "a clockwork orange" and alex ripping his paperwork of that book when the gang broke into the couple's house. years later they meet again when alex was assaulted by his old friends who became policemen when he was in prison and yet they still didn't add alex reading alexander f.'s book at night. i think it was important since the author had been in a similar situation. (his trauma that he added in the book. strays broke into his house and robbed them, raped his pregnant wife—causing a miscarriage)
also there's not the scene that alex gets raped in prison or kill a guy in prison. i am not defending that these type of movies should be the exact same with the book but those adds to alexs character development so it kinda disappointed me.
i believe it also adds to his personality alex try to suicide in his room, his attempts to escape from the hospital—the signs of how desperate he was to get out of this brainwashing. and the movie misses that too.
the movie ends when alex was still in hospital after his jump, surrounded by journalists and camera flashes. but in book alex has a "rebirth". he jumps out the window, he fails to kill himself and remains in a coma, had vivid dreams about sex and violence. and when he woke up, he had his free will again. he could think about ultra violence and rape, even could listen beethoven without getting sick.
so he basically said "fuck the government" and gets back into crime, got a new gang and started doing the things he used to do. BUT THEN ultra-violence starts to bore him, he starts thinking hes grown up. he thinks he should start a family. BUT he also thinks that when he has a child, they will make the mistakes he did, and then his grandson will do it, and then his son... SO IT'S LIKE CLOCKWORK, PEOPLE FOLLOW A PATTERN THAT PEOPLE ARE "DESTINED" TO REPEAT AGAIN AND AGAIN. EVEN WHEN ALEX THINKS HE'S FREE HE IS NOT ACTUALLY FREE, HE JUST FOLLOWS HIS "DESTINY"?? THAT MEANS HES ALMOST FREE. humans are not fully free then. we follow a pattern called "life", doing what we see suitable for ourselves, create what we find moral and immoral but still, keep repeating the cycle of life, just like clockwork.
