Ginger Snaps
*‘out by sixteen or dead on the scene, but together forever.’*

Nearly all movies, series or any media about werewolves is centred around men, yet ‘Ginger Snaps’ is a film focused entirely on the intense relationship between two outcast sisters, using Ginger’s transformation into a werewolf as a metaphor for female puberty. Usually indie (ish) horror movies fall into the category of ‘it’s so bad it’s good’, but ‘Ginger Snaps’ creates two incredibly complex female leads in Brigitte and Ginger, turns the misogynistic horror trope of male desire for women’s bodies on its head, all whilst incorporating dark humour and obviously amazing gothic fashion. Any other film in this genre would have made Sam the ‘saviour’ in the final act, whereas this film centres around Brigitte entirely. Both Emily Perkins and Katharine Isabelle’s performances were impeccable, illustrating the strong bond between the Fitzgerald sisters. I am just in awe of this movie - this has got to be one of the most underrated horror films of the 2000s. A new addition to my Top 4.
