It
I watched this kind of a while ago and its such a modern classic in terms of horror but also in terms of emotion. However, this movie will never be a five stars for me because I am big fan of the book, which, despite its flaws (like the horrible sexualistion of minors and sometimes dense prose) was able to create a stronger and more nuanced message which I think the movie lacks. This is firstly because of runtime, it’s difficult to replicate the bond you create with characters while spending days reading a long book in only an hour or two, but also because a lot of bonding scenes between characters had to be cut. Relationship dynamics changed and not always for the better, with some friendships being underdevelopped.
The „fatal flaw” of this movie for me is the change in time period. I understand it was to try and appeal to a modern audience, but the context of the 1950s in the novel is so important to understanding the nature of „It” and how hatred and childhood trauma manifest in the surreal, horror-story way Stephen King writes.
But overall, the cast was perfect, performances moving, and the cinematography iconic. This movie is a staple and was a cultural phenonemon when I was growing up and it has a special place in my heart.
