Babylon
•••ONE OF MY TOP FILMS EVER•••
"Babylon" is, in my opinion, a pioneering film. People do not grasp the power of the narrative and direction. It is a film that stands out and leaves no viewer indifferent; it is a truly exceptional experience narrated in a masterful way, rarely seen.
Damien Chazelle is a master craftsman who has managed to create a true historical document that is extremely well-researched and precise about an industry that seems ordinary today but marginalized its creators and actors at the time.
"Babylon" offers us the meteoric rise of some of the most important figures in the development of Hollywood in the 1920s. Historically speaking, this period is extremely interesting and important as it marks the transition from silent cinema with Charlie Chaplin to the talkies we know today.
From a technical standpoint, it is absolutely perfect. The scriptwriting is divine, as is the casting, which is, in my opinion, the best that could have been chosen for this film. Margot Robbie is phenomenal; she deserves an award for her chilling performance (she has officially proven to me that she belongs among the greats). We also have Brad Pitt, who, as always, is perfect and accurate in his acting, and a new face in Hollywood, Diego Calva, who is quite good.
The frenetic pace never stops, and the direction and final 3-hour and 15-minute artistic product surpass many of the feature films of recent years. Unfortunately, "Babylon" has faced criticism; it clearly did not deserve it. Some attribute its "poor success" to its 3-hour runtime. People need to learn to appreciate the feature films that directors offer. If the film is 3 hours long, it's because it needs 3 hours to establish its story, characters, and atmosphere to provide the best possible experience for the viewer.
Therefore, criticizing a film for its length is completely ridiculous.
