Onibaba
•••ONE OF MY TOP FILMS EVER•••
Onibaba (1964) is a pillar of horror cinema, a timeless masterpiece that transcends its era with its masterful direction and unique atmosphere. Kaneto Shindō, in a gesture of pure genius, transforms a minimalist setting-a sea of tall grass undulating in the wind-into a space that is both oppressive and hypnotizing.
The film plays on this duality: an almost soothingly beautiful setting that conceals a muted violence, a struggle for survival in which the characters' humanity crumbles. While the characters are by no means moral figures, they remain profoundly human, and therefore deeply moving. Tension builds steadily to a phenomenal final act, an explosion of terror and tragedy of rare power.
But what definitively anchors Onibaba in cinema history is its sound treatment. The soundtrack, one of the best ever made, accompanies every scene with surgical precision, reinforcing the unease and anguish that builds throughout the story. Every sound, every silence is used with an intelligence that commands respect.
With its perfect direction, suffocating atmosphere and unforgettable soundtrack, Onibaba is not just a great horror film, it's an essential one to everybody who claim as cinephile, a monument of the seventh art. Absolutely awesome !!!
