Poor Things
Reception of Poor Things is mixed: some, in majority, reject it as a poor representation of feminism, while others defend it with arguments. This division highlights the fact that “feminism” is not yet universally defined. Yorgos Lanthimos masterfully addresses Bella's loss of innocence, illustrating human cruelty and selfishness. Through a breathtaking image, marked by majestic decor and camerawork mastered to perfection, he creates a satire on modern society. All cinematographic techniques reinforce this surreal and complex exploration. The casting is perfect, Emma Stone deserves her title (Oscar for best actress) for this remarkable role, her acting is offbeat, innovative, moving and just perfect. Others are also there, like the greats Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe.
This complex and visually impressive film, although difficult to access, deserves to be recognized as a modern masterpiece and later a classic in history. It is indeed one of the best films of 2023 (18 Oscar nominations), a year nevertheless full of emotions.
