Possession
•••ONE OF MY TOP FILMS EVER•••
After the strange and fascinating experience of On the Silver Globe, I dived into Possession, by the same director, Andrzej Żuławski, and it was a mind-blowing experience. This film is a unique masterpiece, a whirlwind of emotions and madness, driven by an incredibly powerful direction and breathtaking cinematography.
Żuławski plunges us into a descent into hell where psychological horror and the supernatural merge in controlled chaos. The influence of Lovecraft is undeniable, especially in the design of the creature, an organic nightmare that seems to have crawled out of cosmic horror. Here, terror is not just about physical monstrosity (like the majority of modern "horror" movie) ; it is existential, tied to insanity and the collapse of reality itself.
The direction is astounding: frenetic camera movements, claustrophobic framing, and possessed performances, Isabelle Adjani delivers an unforgettable tour de force. The cinematography, both cold and expressionistic, amplifies the film’s delirious atmosphere, balancing beauty and chaos. Possession was banned in the UK and heavily edited in the US due to its intense and disturbing content.
Possession is more than just a horror film, it’s an hypnotic Lovecraftian nightmare, clearly a pure arthouse film. Żuławski doesn’t aim for conventional scares but instead immerses us in complete madness, a sensory and emotional maelstrom from which no one emerges unscathed. A disturbing and unforgettable masterpiece.
