The Witch
•••ONE OF MY TOP FILMS EVER•••
The Witch is a brilliant portrait of paranoia and religious fervor in the 1600s, The Witch: A New-England Folktale is a slow and terrifying demonic descent, absolutely distressing and hellish in 17th century New England, where we witness the fall progressive development of a family.
The film shows a technical marvel: the lighting, the terribly terrifying music, the cinematography, the rhythm, the setting..., immediately becoming one of the best horror productions of American cinema of the last fifty years. It’s an absolutely terrifying experience. It’s even said that Stephen King himself was terrified by this film. For his first feature film, Robert Eggers gives us a film shot in just 25 days.Storytellingly, the film and its writing draw inspiration from 17th-century New England writings, the subject matter is based on the first witch hysteria in colonial America in Massachusetts, which led to the infamous Salem witch trials of 1692 -1693.
Dozens of times more effective and frightening than a jolt-filled box office hit from James Wan, Robert Eggers is uncompromising in its depiction of its themes and has an ideology of how psychological terror can save the current downfall of the current horror cinema. Horror is not forced down the audience's throat: it is an art to construct it.
