Descendants
In 2015, I deemed this movie the pinnacle of cinema, entertainment and Disney history. Seeing it again after ten years, I have realised that my opinion and judgement at ten-years-old was, in fact, correct.
It is simply rotten to the core that the Oscars have overlooked this audio-visual feast. Descendants pushes the barriers of moral teaching beyond the limits of good and evil—like me *and many others who watched this at such a formative age would concur has been a message that wider society tries to conceal. Did I mention the film is a masterclass of storytelling? From perfect subversion of stereotypical romantic tropes to showing extreme attention to details on the costuming and set design, it sets a standard that no other has been able to top since. If only the rest of Hollywood could catch up, because it’s getting embarrassing! Like, please Christopher Nolan, be our guest and try to even come close to this epitome of beauty and perfection. Although any attempt would be in vain because I believe Descendants truly set it off* and nothing else could even come close to what it has achieved for film and cinema since the medium’s conception.
