Before Sunset
They met again, but not in the way I expected. In this movie, we were shown the reality of love, the fact that they met again 9 years later and have moved on is so depressing.
“Baby, you are gonna miss that plane.”
BY THE WAY, how does it end there? I’m genuinely so stumped on how it ended so abruptly it caught me off guard. We get no insight on anything other than the last thing they did; chilling Celine’s home. I also had no idea there was a sequel until I accidentally came across it, hence me being surprised that they did meet again, but not in the way I expected.
It still has the same feeling as the original movie though, the same sightseeing of a beautiful city, the same fluid conversations, the same continuous scenes that never stop and the same connection they once had 9 years ago. Yes, it is obvious they still feel for each other, even if it is minimal, but they’ve already moved on from that night in Vienna, hence why they are hesitant even though both their relationships are mediocre. Jesse doesn’t want to change anything for his son at the cost of a marriage that is boring and dull in his perspective. However, Celine starts to doubt her opinion of the concept of love, suggesting that there is no such thing, hence why she is satisfied being in a relationship that is empty and involves her partner being distant from her. She blames Jesse for her ability to not love or be loved by anyone, and that every relationship no matter what will end in heartbreak. Things have changed, everything has changed since that one special night, including them, but their connection remains intact. Like I said, everything about them together feels the same as before, especially the amazing conversations they can have with each other so easily. A lot of it has been left to our imaginations, so I guess I’ll take advantage of that aspect and create a million ‘what if’ scenarios.
Before Sunrise and Before Sunset are special in their own ways, expectations vs reality, past vs future, young vs old. They leave you with different feelings, hence making them unique in their respective ways and easy to love one as you love the other. This is why I absolutely love this movie as well as the other one, even if it does have a sad ‘what could have been’ atmosphere. Although, I still stand by this one belief, and that is…
May this love find me, even if it’s 9 years too late.
