Demolition
May the interest of a woman and potential love find me in the way it found Davis Mitchell, just not with his wife (except when he finally confessed),
‘There was love between me and Julia, I just didn’t take care of it’.
My second favourite relationship (if you know me well enough you OBVIOUSLY know the first or else you don’t have the right to anything) is between Chris and Davis because damn the transformation between ‘are you fucking my mom’ to ‘do you think i’m gay’ to ‘11am sharp’ is fucking phenomenal - yes I used fuck right. Not only the transformation but the deep connection they established through fucked up shit between fucked up people is something every soul needs, including and especially me. Yeah one’s a kid and one’s an adult but anyone can be close, therefore this unique relationship touched me deeply.
Now to address Julia and Karen (as well as Davis himself). He instantly draws his attention from his dead wife to this charming woman who clearly shows interest in Davis but remains in a relationship. They both have in common the fact that they didn’t deeply love their respective partners and bonded so well and met through an unbelievable way - if only that vending machine actually worked and he got his M&Ms - those sequence of events really took me away.
Davis’ love for demolishing everything (yes I used demolished because guess what) was a key takeaway from this film as he progressively starts breaking more and more things upgrading from his refrigerator and cappuccino machine to his whole fucking house. It displays how he himself feels the need to express himself in many ways, not just anger as we see a couple times, but to find comfort or emotion in doing an action that requires you to escape that comfort and use your emotions. There is no right or wrong answer to why Davis loved demolition, we see him have a passion for it in the end, hence I could be wrong in saying he wanted to feel something, or (likewise) I could be right.
I will remember a lot from this movie, and not just the dancing scene to some hard ass rock, but the multitude of emotions put on display for me (and you I hope) to thrive for. There are many emotions on display, it just depends which one you connect the deepest with. Jake Gyllenhaal surprises me once again, why do I love every movie? Please give him a happy role, just once.
