Drive
You ever seen a movie that piqued your interest in something? Probably. You ever seen a movie that piqued your interest in two things? Probably not. The two things in question for reference are cars and toothpicks.
Driver is designed as the archetype for an anti-hero, a good man who resorts to doing bad things for the sake of protecting people and doing (obviously) good things. The lack of dialogue in this also really boosts his character, very ironically, because when he does speak it is meaningful, mainly during scenes where he interrogates others or demands the safety of Irene and her son Benicio.
Why does the best women for you always either have a son or have a situationship with their other partner (in this case both)? Irene and (no name) gel so well together in their 5 minute awkward silent scenes and their intimate driving sessions, literally staring into each other’s soul for a lot of the time, too scared to make the next move; until Driver finally makes the move just a couple seconds before caving some guy’s head into the elevator floor. Their moments together stood out for me exceptionally, showing that they understand each other without the need to say much or - in most cases - say anything. When he leaves her in the end, he lets her know beforehand that he most likely will never return as he’s in danger now and cannot reflect that danger onto Irene. Pretty sad that their last moment together was the peak of their love and the peak of Irene’s concern for him as a human being, assumably questioning if he is a good man or not.
Overall, I loved this movie due to Ryan Gosling’s perfect portrayal of this imperfect character who amazed me as the movie progressed. A lot of moments shocked me, including Standard’s death, the elevator scene and the scene where Driver unlocks spidey senses and reacts instantaneously to two hitmen ambushing the apartment whilst Blanche gets her brains blown out. I’m not gonna forget that crazy ass opening scene, which got me hooked instantly (not only because of the NBA commentary in the back). Great movie and I’m glad I watched it, I’m in desperate need to see more dark movies like this.
