The Shining
Astounding and quintessential filmmaking. Every aspect falls into place wonderfully to create such an eerie atmosphere and mythos around the Overlook, while also exploring the pitfalls of masculinity, the nature of ghosts and the dubious responsibility of insanity. Ironic, considering the borderline insanity of Kubrick on set, that this remains such a masterpiece 45 years on. Poor Shelly Duvall man, but fuck everyone who says this performance was bad, she gives a heart rendingly vulnerable and distressing turn here. Could say a million other things but I’ll finish on the score. How DAMN sinister both the genius of Wendy Carlos and Kubrick’s classical picks are here. Enhances the dread tenfold.
