Passing
i remember really enjoying the novella when i read it a few years bsck. not sure why i waited so long to finally watch the movie. stylistically unique and the performances are captivating especially clare. i’m sure people can articulate it better than i would but i think it captures how flimsy of a construct race truly is. we have clare, irene, and brian. all black people that present completely different to the world. clare is able to pass fully as white with a white husband and children, living a life where she seems to always be lonely and always awaiting danger that will come when her husband finds out the truth. irene who is darker than clare but lighter than her husband and seems to be very stuck between two worlds, unwilling to pass but unwilling to recognize the realities of the world her sons will grow up in. brian who is the darkest of the three, unable to pass at all and unwilling to shelter his sons from the danger of being black in america. he doesn’t have the privilege of passing and neither will his sons. i will have to think more but so good!
