Vertigo
this is the oldest movie ive ever watched so far, and im happy to say im at that point where i can appreciate and genuinely love older films, wow man, im fucking floored, maybe my opinion will change when i eventually watch more hitchcock and older films, or maybe its just a fucking masterpiece, i fucking love this film like, man i feel great, a little sad and on edge, but overall great, this is a film where it'll linger on you after your watch, and it'll grow on you more and more as time passes
i thought this film would lean more thriller than romance but i am definitely not complaining, its still thrilling, but its a romance at heart, its a love story about obsession and illusion, i really have no complaints about this film aside from some wonky effects, but its made in 1958 like i cant expect modern effects, watch this movie at night with red leds, im telling you it'll make this film hit so much more, its just so nice to look at, ive never seen the color green used so well in a film until now
it still looks amazing though, the colors, the cinematography and the set design just look so fucking good, the sound design is incredible just like psycho, and i see why de palma is so influenced by hitchcock and is a master at camerawork, because vertigo has some of the best camerawork ive ever seen, and surprisingly even though im a horror guy, i loved vertigo so much more, the pacing is a big issue for some people, but for me it was perfect, and its never boring or slow, this film builds on atmosphere and tension, and i was just itching to see what was coming next
people who say the plot is convoluted, either needs to rewatch the film or they're just not very bright, like yea there are some dumb and stupid plotholes, and not everything is perfect, but you understand what hitchcock is trying to do, if you're too focused on the plot, you're watching it wrong, if i watched this earlier into my cinema career, id probably like it way less and would've been watching it wrong, but now its like, not everything has to have a clear and linear narrative to be amazing
the plot is still great and i didnt find it as confusing as other people, but its not the main focus, sure its not "realistic", but a lot of films aren't, you just have to watch it and give yourself into the film, don't think too hard about it, maybe its because my favorite director is david lynch, but the narrative doesn’t matter too much to me when everything else is amazing, but the plot is still great and envokes a strange feeling out of you
that ending is up for debate, people don't like it, but i enjoyed it, i wish it had more umph to it, but james stewart and kim novak are amazing in that final act, i see why people don't like it though, its an abrupt change and it definitely confused me on why john was doing what he was doing, but like its still amazing and really impactful, it just comes out of nowhere
from start to finish i was captivated, there is so much to love about this film, the crazy thing is if i knew this was a romance i probably wouldn't of watched it, fortunately for me, its not just a romance for the full film, it turns more psychological and dream-like, it lulls you in, like you're being hypnotized, hitchcock man, you're ahead of your time, man vertigo is peak cinema, i see why so many directors are inspired by this film, its an undeniable masterpiece, and honestly on a rewatch it might become a perfect 10/10
