Chills.
This IS the definitive Superman movie and portrayal.

Likes-
Christopher Reeve is perfect.
Flawless as Clark Kent & Flawless as Superman.
Margot Kidder as Lois Lane = Perfect
The opening = Perfect
I could go on, but there’s no need. Everyone knows this movie is incredible.

Dislikes-
You kidding? None.

In conclusion, this movie is every thing. I’m excited for Gunn’s take, but I’m afraid it’ll have to settle for the number 2 spot at best.

Everything I want in a Superman film and more. I had my doubts and concerns going in but I was pleasantly surprised by this movie.

Likes-
The suit is awesome! I didn’t love it initially, but seeing it in action was great. The colors, the silhouette, and the logo work so well.

The cast…perfect. One of my main concerns was how packed the film looked in the trailers. I worried that there was too much happening. I feared the latter would take away from what could have been a completely solo Superman film, but I couldn’t have been farther off. There’s such a good balance of everyone.

David Corenswet IS Superman. Not to take away from any other actors who have donned the trunks as I don’t believe there’s been a bad actor portrayal of Superman. Corenswet is in my top 3 for sure.

Lex! Nicholas Hoult is an S tier hater driven by the purest form of envy, and plagued by shortsighted intelligence. What more can we ask for. Can’t wait to see more of him.

Overall, it’s a perfect starting point for this new DC cinematic universe.

Dislikes-
Everything comes down to a matter of preference, I understand that. But the discourse around this film is a big reason why I hardly engage in CBM talks. That’s not the film’s fault of course.

Likes:
- I love love love Henry Cavil as Superman. I’ll give Corenswet a fair shot once his time comes but for now, Cavil is second only to Christopher Reeve when it comes to embodying the physical aesthetics of the character.
- The rest of the cast is great in my opinion too. Fishburne as Perry and Adams as Lois Lane are standouts.
- The Kent family scenes work pretty well for me…except that ONE.
- I like the suit. An upgrade from the one that came before it, but nothing touches the original.
- I think the opening is good and further I like how prominent Krypton is in this film. I appreciated the moments between Clark and his blood father.
- I think Zod works well for the most part.
- I also appreciate how Snyder subtlety set up his universe with the small nods and name drops. They all naturally occur and none feel forced. (Kind of a lost art in CBMs)

Dislikes😬:
- Why is this movie so damn ashy? There’s multiple points where it feels like everything on screen is literally gray.
- Johnathan Kent’s death… ( I don’t feel like elaborating)
- The first act where Clark is this brooding muscle man. Particularly the truck scene.
- My main issue with this installment is very similar to my gripes with Nolan’s Batman films. There’s a general understanding of some main bullet points that make up these characters, and all the rest of their nuance gets disregarded and filled by the director.
- Metropolis literally doesn’t even exist anymore 😭. Superman willfully levels multiple buildings while fighting Zod. There doesn’t seem to be much effort to minimize the damage being done, which feels unlike Superman.
- This is the first appearance of this new Superman…and he KILLS Zod??? No no no.

Overall, much improved from Superman Returns. It’s really not bad and it’s entertaining throughout. The stakes are there. The villain AND his motivations make since. The character portrayal works well. And each of the scenes feel well directed. Where this movie falls short is the need to pivot from so many critical aspects of the Superman character and mythos. The new grim take is one that we could have gone without. Again better than I remembered.

There’s some really good moments/saves. I love the Daily Planet globe and the ballpark scenes. I think Routh as Clark Kent is awesome, but I don’t love him as Superman. He isn’t bad at all, just not my favorite. Most of the film holds up visually although it is a little darker than I remembered. Bryan Singer’s direction is a big plus for this film as well. It’s clear that he understands the character. I also really like how we see Metropolis respond to Superman.

I don’t like how involved Richard and Jason are. I think they take too much of the runtime. I get that they are part of Clark’s conflict (Him returning to a place that’s moved on from him) but I wasn’t a fan. I would’ve liked to see more of Martha. Not having Clark reconnect with his mother after 5 years was a miss.

Lex Luthor was interesting to say the absolute least. I thought the portrayal from Spacey was ok, but his big evil plan was laughable.

The plot and most of the writing are the weakest points of the film. They created a lot of trouble for themselves by trying to tie this film to the originals instead of rebooting entirely. The suit is also a miss for me. Easily the worst live action look for Superman.

I skipped to this for my rewatch because I anticipated it being much worse than it was and wanted to get it out of the way. I’m very curious to see how close to the bottom it ends up after I watch Superman 3 and 4 (If I remember correctly, these are rough but we’ll see)

…ok let me take a breath.

Likes-
I’m an adamant Batfleck defender and that has not changed. He’s everything! The only actor to perfectly portray the duality of Bruce Wayne.
Cavil is good, it’s not his fault.
I like the opening (kinda). Cut past the Joe Chill scene and get to Bruce’s pov of the Metropolis event.
Superman’s suit is a little more vibrant and it makes all the difference.
The montage of Superman making saves around the world makes me think Snyder heard the criticism and tried to address them. But then it gets flipped on its head again.
Clark facing the court physically and metaphysically=👍🏾

Him letting that court blow up=👎🏾

Why is he so selective with his super speed?😭

Dislikes-
Eisenburg as Lex…no. I will say, the tech giant gone mad has aged well. Still no.
Doomsday…no.
The stuff from the future…no
Batman, like Superman, has zero regard for human life.

This is the first one in my rewatch that I can say it worse than I remembered. It suffers tremendously from trying to skip ahead to meet Marvel where they were (Captain America: Civil War released very shortly after) and that’s where I give Snyder a break. I’ll never be a fan of his Superman but I’m curious about what a fleshed out Batman movie would’ve looked like. I think Warner Bros. felt the heat and got far too overzealous stretching out and entire cinematic universe so suddenly. I fear James Gunn is doing the same thing but we will see. This movie literally feels like DC squeezed an entire MCU equivalent phase in to 2 and a half hours. (Over 3 if you opt into the Ultimate Version, I didn’t) Someone explain it well a while back and basically said that what DC did here was show fragments of Infinity War and Endgame in the first Avengers movie. Why would you show me the top of the mountain so early? I don’t even have my boots on yet.
