Sentimental Value
To be honest, this is my very first experience of Joachim Trier's crafts, I don't know much on how he works, but this masterpiece keeps on lingering deeply inside of me. Until now, for a very long period of time(since my top 4 and it actually become my top 4 now btw), I haven't watched a film that could barely touch me, moved like Sentimental Value, I know for a fact that I'm very young, still unexperienced, still got many things to comprehend but I'm literally dying to be at the level of Joachim.
I love all things about the film itself. I love how the house could be a lively main character, the changing in the color, the cracks in the wall.... I love how the shift of the colors to express the characters' inner feelings. I love how Joachim build the characters, the father, much like his daughters, suffered from family-related trauma, has find filmmaking is the only language to process the trauma, then he use that language to express himself to his children. And also love the silence spaces where the father and the elder daughter smoke, where they look at each other smiling at the end... I just genuinely love Sentimental Value.
The film holds a message that I truly resonate with which is arts have the ability of connecting human that beyond the reach of any languages that have ever existed and act like a vessel for healing.
