Eraserhead
CC Challenge 4/52: The First Film You’d Pick in the Criterion Closet
Was hoping to make this challenge all first time watches, but this prompt screamed rewatch to me so here we are.
Eraserhead was the first Criterion release I ever bought. I knew nothing about it, other than that the cover intrigued me, and a friend swore up and down it was one of their favorites. Thank God I took their recommendation.
Really cannot overstate how formative this was for me when I first saw it in high school. There is before Eraserhead and after Eraserhead. It opened my eyes to a whole new kind of cinema. It encouraged me to seek out stranger and more complex films. Shudder to think where I would be if this wasn’t recommended to me all those years ago. Watching it today, was just as dread inducing as the first time.
It’s not my favorite Lynch film, but man it holds a really special place in my heart.
Godspeed David Lynch, we miss you.
