I believe some movies change you after you watch them, not necessarily big changes, but after you feel like something has shifted and you gained a whole new side of yourself. This movie was one of these. I've never seen a movie that has this much complete silence. In the moments of pure silence, you sit and go through what Ruben is. You hear what he's hearing and witness his life change overnight and him having to become a whole new person with a different lifestyle. Reuben was in denial of becoming deaf; it was hard to just accept that you can no longer hear and it took him time. Throughout the movie, he learns how to be deaf ( sign langauge etc) but he still can't accept it. He does everything to get the money needed for that surgery to get his hearing somewhat back. After weeks of healing, he goes to the doctor and she finally makes the hearing aids work. You could see the hopefulness in his face as he was waiting. When it eventually does, he's shocked to hear completely different frequencies and voices than he used to hear. He asked the doctor to make it better, to fix it. after she tries, and it doesn't help much. He finally realizes. There's no going back to how he was before. The ending is perfect. He finally accepts who he is and takes the hearing aid off. transiting to just complete silence again. However, now he's content. He finally found his moment of stillness.
