Death Note
Rewatching this was like going to the house of a friend whom I haven’t seen in years.
The series does downgrade after L dies but it’s not the worse thing in the world either.
You know what is the worst thing in the world?
The ending.
They should’ve kept it how it was in the manga.
I can very much understand the sentiment of Light running away and having flashes of his life just to die isolated with Ryuk comforting him (I will admit, the imagery of him running in the sunset and seeing his younger self walking by was really cool) but it misses the point of the og ending and treats his death as “a fall from grace,” which I ended up interpreting us “yeah he’s a mass murderer and killed so many people that carbon dioxide levels probably dropped, but he had good intentions so let’s mourn him.” 😐
In the manga, Light doesn’t get to run away after being shot, he rolls around begging Ryuk for help to kill everyone and pleading and screaming how he doesn’t wanna die, but then Ryuk, who knows it’s Light’s time to die, and if he saves him then he himself will die, denies him and instead writes Light Yagami on his death note. Light is stripped of his dignity and confidence in his final moments, all with the intention of making him look as pathetic as possible, bc that’s what he deserved.
Like I said tho, the imagery of the anime ending is so cool and (on its own) so well executed that I would absolutely love it if it was anything other than the ending to Death Note.
Overall I have a soft spot for this series and (excluding the ending) it’s honestly amazing.
