Dune: Part Two
My first actual review :00
This film is a good example of nailing everything that they pretty much could. The casting, production design, costume design, sound design, and Hans Zimmer’s score (one of his best). Everything is in the correct place. It’s almost robotic. This means that it’s on the mercy of the source material.
Now I haven’t read any of the Dune books, so I can’t comment on the source material personally, but I’ve read plenty of reviews that say that the movies are true to it. I found the plot turn of Paul deciding to go south and in general just siding with his mother very abrupt. We are in Paul’s head throughout the movies and see what his motives are. So, it’s weird to see him drink the worm “piss” and just turn into a bad guy. This might be all explained in the third movie or whatever. I still feel like these movie series movies must stand by themselves in some way at least.
Now into some more personal critiques. I found most of the characters in the movie quite cold and the relationships between them lacking depth. As much as I felt that I could dive in this world and relate to the people, I couldn’t do the same to the characters. We scratch the surface with Chani when she talks about her world view and how gods and prophets are there just to control people. You’d think that in 5 hours and 21 minutes there would be more development of the two main characters.
Now I know that these movies are cinematic blockbuster third buzzword fourth buzzword films and I enjoy them, but no matter how much money you pour into them, I won’t find them anything but that. What I will take away from this movie, are the immense performances, innovative production design and the sounds and score of Zimmer. There is a lot more negative stuff to talk about in this movie because outside of the negativity it’s perfect. I just feel that it is emotionally bleak.
Also I feel bad for Leto dying in the first film cause Oscar Isaac could’ve said “They fly now” for a second time in a sci-fi dessert when the Heavy troopers flew on top of the rock at the start of the movie.
