Ritual
outstanding performance by ayako fujitani, the scene where she shows the director the building will forever be one of my favourite scenes ever. the director and she have incredible chemistry and i can’t help but have the fattest grin on my face when they’re out having a good time. the cinematography is incredible, it’s bleak when it needs to be, and when it wants to the colours pop out, fitting ayako’s character and the overall tone of the film. the screenplay is one of the best i think i’ll ever come across, the dialogue between characters was outstanding and felt real, while the monologues were deep and interesting. I think She is in my top 5 favourite characters i’ve seen in film, she’s incredibly interesting and well acted, she’s a very interesting study of loneliness, depression, and childhood trauma. this film has always intrigued me despite not knowing what it’s about, and i tried watching it on multiple occasions but could not find where to watch it. i’m truly glad i found it because this is an incredible film about loneliness, depression and love. i don’t know if i’ll watch a movie i love more than it, but i said the same thing about oldboy and here we are. it’s a shame only 14k people on letterboxd have seen this masterpiece.
